In everything, we should aim for balance – yin and yang. Yin is passive, slow, feminine, mysterious; yang is active, fast, masculine, obvious. And one cannot exist without the other. Shade cannot exist without light, and light is only light when compared to darkness. Harmony is when yin and yang are in balance.
Yin yoga is the slower practice of longer held asanas. In holding a pose, it allows us to work at a deeper level, exercising and strengthening our joints and deep connective tissues, ligaments, fascia and bones. The slow pace of yin yoga allows us to enter a place of stillness within us – to touch the void and become the witness. Being still in a pose allows us to experience a sense of deep relaxation. Props such as bolsters, blocks, and blankets are used and encouraged in a yin yoga practice to facilitate being still for just a little bit longer, to see if you can relax just a little bit more.
